The Typical Teens social groups have been
offered through Children at Risk (Ottawa,
ON, Canada) since the fall of 2003. The
groups focus on experiential learning of
social skills in a fun and sociable teen
environment. The strength of the TT model
is the inclusion of trained peer mentors,
supported by arms-length facilitation from
the adult group leaders, creating an
authentic "real world" teen social situation
that includes full support for the learning of
new skills and the generalization and
consolidation of previously acquired social
knowledge.

"You begin to think that you
are not alone in the world with
autism. There are other people
out there who have this
invisible disability."

"… from participating in
this group, I have learned
to talk a little more with
the people around me …"

"It was fun to go
regular places with
regular people and do
fun things."

"Well, being with other people isn't
as bad, isn't as boring, and isn't as a
waste of time as it may seem … it's
still pretty interesting in a different
way … and it was enjoyable. I would
recommend these groups because it
would help develop other people's
social skills and their understanding
that company is a good thing and that
being with others is quite
worthwhile."
